OptiSense is the world's leading provider of photothermal measuring systems for coating thicknesses on a wide variety of substrates. Our innovative PaintChecker solutions include industrial test systems, mobile measuring devices and numerous related services.
Since the PaintChecker sensors are developed and manufactured in-house – made in Germany –, we can also offer you tailor-made solutions for the most unusual applications.
All good things ...
come in threes. Our OptiSense portfolio proves that the best things usually come in threes. Whether industrial test systems, mobile measurement devices or services, our solutions are guaranteed to get to grips with any measurement task, no matter how demanding.
ACA CoatingsTech Conference: Coatings and Technologies for a Resilient Future
With a series of presentations by renowned industry experts, the ACA CoatingsTech Conference from April 28-30 in Pittsburg (USA) offers an excellent platform for coating companies to prepare for the future.
The presentation by Dr. Fabian Gaußmann (OptiSense) highlights the current challenges and trends as well as the key role that coatings play in protecting valuable assets and critical infrastructure. Dr. Gaußmann will be speaking about a completely new approach: This recently developed measuring method allows endlessly long surfaces and moving objects to be tested without having to move along with the parts. His presentation will also provide an outlook on technological key factors that will help the industry to chart a sustainable course and prepare itself for future market requirements.
Powder coating week
Strong commitment to the continued education of the powder coating industry is one of the main lines of Powder Coating Week, which opens its doors in Orlando, Florida, on April 14, 2025.
The high-profile event will be hosted by the Powder Coating Institute (PCI) for the 32nd time. While PCI is coordinating the final details, speakers and exhibitors are ready to meet with the approximately 1,500 expected attendees to discuss how to produce even higher powder coating quality. Visit OptiSense at booth 23, where together with our distributor Rhopoint Americas Inc. we will answer all your questions about coating thickness testing.
Battery&Power World in Munich
Battery&Power World, the specialist conference for battery technology, will take place at the Science Congress Center Munich (SCCM) on February 25 and 26, 2025. OptiSense will be there with a presentation on a completely new approach: this photothermal measurement method makes it possible to test endlessly long surfaces and moving objects without having to move along with the parts.
The OptiSense presentation will use practical examples to demonstrate various solutions for automated inline integration of non-contact coating thickness testing in order to optimize all processes in the line, make battery production more efficient and thus achieve significant cost savings.
World premiere at the JOTlive painting and powder coating event 2024
Almost 100 visitors attended this week's JOT live coating and powder event at the Atlantic Hotel in Heidelberg to catch up on trends and developments in surface coating
The OptiSense presentation by Dr. Fabian Gaußmann, who presented a full-surface scanning coating thickness inspection system, was very well attended. The new technology actively uses the movement between part and sensor instead of expensively compensating it, as is the case with conventional devices. The subsequent intensive question and answer session showed the great interest in such a solution, which can measure components of any length. The main question was when the system will be available on the market. The good news: the first pilot run has already been produced!
Pioneering new coating thickness measurement method
With the new PaintChecker Move it is possible to inspect endlessly long and moving objects without having to move along with the components.
The new technology actively utilises the movement between the workpiece and the sensor instead of compensating for it, as is the case with conventional devices. This makes it possible for the first time to inspect objects of any length, movement and even large surfaces.
Moving measurement with a modular design
The new, scanning OptiSense system is called PaintChecker Move and has a completely modular design so that the measuring device can always be optimally adapted to the respective application:
The excitation and detection modules are separate and can be configured independently of each other. They are connected via mounting wedge that also contains the data cable connection and provides the mechanical connection to the customer's system. The angle of the wedge is selected accordingto the respective test situation.
The PaintChecker Move scans the entire surface
The spatially resolved calculation of the coating thickness and visualisation takes place seamlessly on the fly. The surface scan provides a full-surface map of the component coating, in which the coating thickness is displayed in colour. This makes it immediately recognisable where the component has been undercoated (red) or overcoated (blue). Defective coatings can be distinguished from faultless components (green) at a glance and can be reworked before curing.
How the new PaintChecker Move works
As the component moves along the sensor, it first passes through an excitation zone (red), in which the coating is heated by a few degrees by light radiation. It then enters the measuring zone (blue), in which the local temperature is recorded at several hundred points simultaneously. As the component passes through the measuring zone, the cooling of the coating is measured periodically and the coating thickness is calculated from the temperature curve. The temporally overlapping evaluation results in continuous, uninterrupted recording.
The new scanning 3D inspection process complements previous fields of application with the non-contact, fast and precise measurement of large workpieces and moving objects.
LAB Italia Day 1
The renowned LAB Italia exhibition in the heart of Milan got off to an impressive start: Throughout the whole exhibition day, a large number of visitors came to the URAI booth to learn about technical developments in the laboratory world.
URAI offers innovative solutions and instruments from leading international companies enabling its customers to achieve highest quality in laboratory testing. URAI will present the OptiSense non-contact mobile and industrial measuring systems for precise and contact-free testing of coating thicknesses.
OptiSense coating thickness expert Jörg Mülleneisen came from Germany especially for the trade fair and will advise you on even the trickiest coating-substrate combinations during LAB Italia. Take the opportunity to have all your questions answered at the URAI booth until June 19 at the NH Milano Congress Center | Milanofiori | Booth 106.
